Alter Ipse Amicus

Imbricated messages
Overlapping scales of feeling
A perfect flexible shell
Dragon’s skin
A cavalier’s proud armor
Decorous with tokens
A battered old can
Battles you’ve fought
And lost and won and lost

You haven’t lost the art
Of keeping your neck straight
Proud and haughty
When you make presentation on the field
(No matter the times you’ve been thrown)

Voice calm and clear
Carries over the wet grass
The heads of the assembled
“Ave atque vale”

Cut an admirable figure
Forgivable conceit of the proud
To think your armor gives nothing away
When it’s fabric is knit with tokens of those you loved
And in the glare of the morning sun
The crest on your shield tells me everything
“Alter Ipse Amicus”
